Does Colorado require an inspection to drive for Uber or Lyft?
Yes. The Colorado Public Utilities Commission says each rideshare vehicle must be inspected before it carries passengers, and that drivers work with the rideshare company to get that done. The Colorado rule on rideshare vehicle inspections calls for an inspection before a vehicle is approved and at least one inspection per year after that, on the form the state prescribes. A vehicle that fails is placed out of service until the problem is fixed.
The PUC also notes that each rideshare company can set its own rules on top of the state ones. That is why the app is the place to check which form it wants, when yours is due, and how to send it in. We do not guess at those rules for you. We do the inspection on the form you bring.
What does a rideshare inspection check?
The state rule lists the items. They are the foot brakes and parking brake, the steering, the windshield and other glass, the wipers, the headlights, tail lights, turn signals, and brake lights, the front seat adjustment, the doors, the horn, the speedometer, the bumpers, the muffler and exhaust, the tires and wheels, the mirrors, and the seat belts. Your app may ask for more, so read its form before you come in.
Most of those are things a driver can glance at in the driveway. Walk around the car with the lights on, try the horn and wipers, and look at the tires. A burned-out bulb or a worn wiper blade is a small fix before the visit and an annoying fail during it.
Next step: our Uber and Lyft inspection in Durango page covers how to set up the visit. Tell us whether the app asked for Uber, Lyft, or both.
Is an Uber or Lyft inspection the same as a DOT or PUC inspection?
No. An Uber or Lyft inspection is for the rideshare app that asked for it. A DOT inspection and a PUC inspection are separate checks for other kinds of commercial or regulated use, with their own paperwork. Ace AutoFix does all three, so tell us which one your paperwork names and we run the right check. Our DOT inspection and PUC inspection pages cover those, and the diagnostics and inspections page lists every inspection we do.
What happens if my car fails the inspection?
We tell you which item failed and what it will take to fix it before any work starts. Nothing gets added without your OK, and we can send text and photo updates. The price is labor and parts, with no supply, ordering, or disposal fees.
Ace AutoFix handles the mechanical items on the list, such as brakes, parking brakes, steering parts like tie rods and ball joints, headlamps and bulbs, wiper blades, and exhaust work. Our brake repair page covers pads, rotors, calipers, and parking brakes. We do not do windshield or glass repair or body work, so if one of those fails, we will say so plainly.
