Why does my car pull to one side?

A car usually pulls to one side because of uneven tire pressure, an alignment that is out of spec, uneven tire wear, a brake that is not releasing, or worn steering and suspension parts. Start by checking tire pressure on all four tires. If the pull stays, Ace AutoFix in Durango can find the cause before any parts are replaced.

What does it mean when a car pulls to one side?

A pull means the car drifts left or right when you let the steering wheel go straight on a flat road, or you have to hold the wheel off center to keep it in your lane. Many roads are crowned so water runs off, which can cause a slight drift to the right. A real pull is steady, happens on flat roads too, and does not go away. It tells you something in the tires, alignment, brakes, or steering is not even from one side to the other.

Can low tire pressure make a car pull?

Yes. A tire with less air has more drag, so the car leans toward that side. Check all four tires with a gauge when they are cold and set them to the pressure on the sticker inside the driver door. Pressure changes with temperature and elevation, so a tire that was fine last month can read low now. Our post on why tire pressure changes in the mountains explains why that happens around Durango. If one tire keeps losing air, have it checked.

Is a pull a sign my alignment is off?

Often, yes. Alignment is the set of angles that point the wheels straight and keep them level with the road. A pothole, a curb, or worn parts can knock those angles out of spec. Then the car drifts, the steering wheel may sit off center when you drive straight, and the tires wear faster on one edge. Our post on how often to get a wheel alignment covers when to have it checked.

Next step: see our wheel alignment in Durango page. Ace AutoFix does 2-wheel and 4-wheel alignments on cars and gas or light-duty trucks.

Can uneven tire wear cause a pull?

Yes. Tires that wear unevenly, or a mix of tires with different tread, can grip the road differently from side to side. A tire with an internal problem can also pull the car toward one side. Rotating tires on schedule helps them wear evenly, which our post on how often to rotate tires explains. If a pull changes sides after a tire rotation, that points to a tire, not the alignment.

Why does my car pull only when I brake?

A pull that starts or gets stronger when you press the brake pedal usually comes from the brakes. A caliper that sticks, a brake hose that does not release, or worn pads on one side can make one wheel brake harder than the other. A sticking caliper can also cause a pull when you are not braking, and that wheel may feel hot or smell after a drive. Grinding or squealing with the pull is another sign, covered in why brakes grind. Have the brakes checked soon, because uneven braking matters most in a hard stop.

Can worn steering or suspension parts cause a pull?

Yes. Tie rods, ball joints, control arms, and struts hold each wheel in place. When one wears, the wheel can shift as you drive, so the car wanders, pulls, or feels loose. You may also hear a clunk over bumps. Worn parts can also keep an alignment from holding, so they get checked before the wheels are aligned. See our steering repair in Durango page for more on what we check.

How to narrow down why a car pulls to one side

  1. Check all four tires with a gauge when cold and set them to the pressure on the driver door sticker.
  2. Look at the tires for uneven wear, low tread, or a bulge on one side.
  3. Notice when the pull happens: all the time, only when braking, or only on some roads.
  4. Listen for clunks over bumps and check whether one wheel feels hot after a drive.
  5. Book an inspection so the shop can check tires, brakes, steering and suspension parts, and alignment before any repair.

Questions people ask

Why does my car pull to one side?

The most common causes are uneven tire pressure, an alignment that is out of spec, uneven tire wear, a sticking brake, and worn steering or suspension parts. Check tire pressure first.

Can low tire pressure make my car pull?

Yes. A tire with less air has more drag, so the car leans toward that side. Set all four tires to the pressure on the driver door sticker.

Why does my car pull only when I brake?

That usually points to the brakes, such as a caliper that sticks or worn pads on one side, so one wheel brakes harder than the other. Have the brakes checked soon.

Will an alignment fix a car that pulls?

It fixes a pull caused by alignment angles that are out of spec. If the cause is a tire, a brake, or a worn steering part, that needs to be found and fixed first.

Will Ace AutoFix fix the car without asking first?

No. We explain what we find and what it will take before parts come off, and nothing gets added without your OK. The price is labor and parts, with no supply, ordering, or disposal fees.
